Dance Expressions
Express Teams
Our competitive teams perform throughout the year at various local events in addition to competing across the east coast in the spring months. Our teams are designed to allow intermediate to advanced dancers to grow in their technique, skills, and abilities. Dancers must audition to be placed on our team, please reach out to Angie for more audition information.
What is competition dance?
Competition dance is a financial commitment and takes up a great deal of time. It is a learning experience that provides dancers with the opportunity to develop sportsmanship, character, responsibility, leadership, and self-discipline. At Dance Expressions, our competitive teams are called Express Teams. Dancers are placed on a team based on their audition. Our teams compete at up to five competitions per season.
What is the financial difference between recreational and competitive dance?
Recreational dancers pay monthly tuition, costume fees, and a recital fee. Competitive dancers pay monthly tuition, costume fees, a recital fee, competition fees, hotel accommodation when travelling, uniform costs, and other various expenses. We know that competition dance can be a financial burden to some families, that is why we offer the option to fundraise. A timeline will be given for payment due dates, it is up to the parent/guardians responsibility to pay their bill on time, every time. Failure to pay all fees may result in the dancer being pulled from the competition. The parent/guardian must alert Angie before committing to the team of any extenuating circumstances that may prevent them from being able to financially support their dancer.
How much time per week does a competitive dancer spend at the studio?
Competition dancers spend up to four nights a week in the studio. This time is spent advancing technique, learning choreography, and perfecting routines for the stage. Express dancers will also spend up to five weekends in the spring at competitions. Our dancers also make appearances at local events, typically on weekends around holidays.
What is the absence policy?
All dancers are required to attend all of their scheduled practices and performances unless excused by the director. Make sure that you fit class times into your weekly schedule, so that being absent is not an issue. Additional rehearsals may be added to the schedule around competition/recital time, these practices are mandatory. If a dancer is sick, their parent/guardian must let their teacher know before their scheduled class time. If a dancer accrues five absences, they may be subject to removal from the next competition. Legitimate excuses must be brought to Angie well in advance.
How many dances does a dancer participate in?
Express dancers participate in a minimum of two group dances. Dancers may be invited to participate in additional dances. Some dancers will be chosen by Angie to perform in a solo, duet, or trio.
What does an Express Dancer wear to practice?
Competition dancers are required to wear their uniform to all express practices. Express dancers must purchase a dance team jacket and their uniform. Dancers must wear their dance team jacket at all events at all times. The dancers hair must always be tidy, in a bun or ponytail for practice or as specified for competitions.
What does a weekend at competition look like?
Typically competitions may run from Friday – Sunday. Dancers will be required to be stage ready two hours before their call time. Dancers arrive to the competition location on Friday, stay overnight in a hotel, perform on Saturday and Sunday, and return home on Sunday night. All competitions are different, some may be close to home and some hours away. Some competitions choose to only compete one day (Saturday). The competition schedule is given to parents at the parent meeting during the beginning of a new season, and the routine schedule (given by the competition) is sent out as soon as possible, usually the week before the competition.
